Fun (and Affordable!) Layered Doormats in 2020

In the coming weeks, I’d like to give my front door a simple style refresh. I’ll share more details soon, but I’m definitely going to layer doormat over an outdoor rug. It looks so welcoming, and I love the added pattern/pop of color!

In general, people tend to layer an 18″x 30″ doormat over a 2′ x 3′ outdoor rug, or a 2′ x 3′ doormat over a 3′ x 5′ rug (as seen above). With a little bit of poking around the internet, it quickly became apparent to me that while there are *a lot* of affordable options for 18″x 30″ doormats and 2′ x 3′ rugs, pairing a 2′ x 3′ doormat with a 3′ x 5′ outdoor rug can easily cost over $200. For instance, in the (extremely gorgeous) example above, the welcome mat is $88 and the outdoor rug is “on sale” for $125 — most definitely out of budget for this project.

I did briefly contemplate going with an 18″x 30″ and a 2′ x 3′ outdoor rug, but our door has sidelights, and I think a 3′ x 5′ rug looks more proportional for the space. Sooo… I went digging! And many, many hours later, I unearthed five outdoor rugs that are all under $40, and paired them with 2′ x 3′ welcome mats that are also all under $40 (and most are under $30).

I hope you enjoy them!

And here’s how they look when layered:

Which combination is your favorite? I went with this one:

Rug / Mat

The combination looks very similar to the example from Studio McGee, but has a much more affordable price tag. My outdoor rug is coming in the mail next week and I can’t wait to see it!

Thank you so much for reading! Have a great weekend!
